Thermography, thermal imaging, or thermal video, is a type of infrared imaging. Thermographic cameras detect radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Our lab currently provides tools for both contact (TempTouch, TempTouch RM, ShoePod Diabetic, Tempstat) and non-contact thermography (FLIR’s Infrared camera). Infrared thermography currently remains the gold standard for temperature measurements. However, contact thermometry provides useful information in weight bearing mode for patients with lower extremity pathologies, specially diabetic foot disease. Pioneering work by Drs. Lavery & Armstrong in dermal thermometry has led to three independent clinical trials supporting the use of thermometry for lower extremities funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Veterans Affairs (VA), which provided scientific evidence to develop thermometry as a clinical tool. Additionally results from Dr. Bharara’s doctoral research have provided the physiological evaluation of thermoreceptors in plantar feet using contact thermometry and the importance of measurements In weight bearing mode.
