Literature across professions show there are generational differences in how learners perceive what constitutes mistreatment in the learning environment. This is an important topic because it has profound implications on student learning and well being. Foundational principles that underline respectful communication with learners is emphasized and opportunities to assess clinical scenarios are provided. Findings from the Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation Questionnaire are used to help us understand the extent to which the problem exists in medicine. Comparisons are made across other professions.
