Instructional Process for Facilitating the Simone SODO Family Simulation at Your Institution
The Simone SODO Simulation is an IPE module designed to run for three 60-minute sessions. Each session builds upon the previous one and is intended to be completed sequentially with the same interprofessional teams.
Learning Objectives for the Simone SODO Simulation
- Recognize a patient with common obstetric complications.
- Explain how different professions would be involved in the management of a specific patient case.
- Identify the social determinants of health related to a specific patient case presentation.
- Analyze how social determinants of health might impact management of a specific patient.
- Develop a treatment plan that involves an Interprofessional Healthcare team and addresses the Social Determinants of Health impacting a specific patient's care.

Session One Guide
Facilitator to read before proceeding to Session Three “Story Board - Visit 1 with “Simone Sodo”
- Students complete pre-session assessment one (Simone Sodo Assessment - Pre Session 1)
- Divide students into interprofessional teams (4-8 students).
- Have students introduce themselves to their team mates
- Students review the EHR focusing on history and physical with an emphasis social history (Link to Session 1 EHR)
- Students watch Simone simulated encounter video #1
- Have students discuss observations from video and EHR review and develop SOAP-VS collaboratively with IP team (Sample SOAP-VS Guide)
Session Two Guide
Facilitator to read before proceeding to Session Three “Story Board - Visit 2 with “Simone Sodo”
- Students complete pre-session assessment two (Simone Sodo Assessment - Pre Session 2)
- Students reconvene in their same interprofessional teams
- Students review the updated EHR for new information on Simone’s health (Link to Session 2 EHR)
- Students watch Simone simulated encounter video #2
- Team to discuss any new findings and incorporate into SOAP-VS with out deleting their previous documentation
Session Three Guide
Facilitator to read before proceeding to Session Three “Story Board - Visit 3 with “Simone Sodo”
- Students complete pre-session assessment three (Simone Sodo Assessment - Pre Session 3)
- Students reconvene in their same interprofessional teams
- Students review the updated EHR for new information on Simone’s health (Link to Session 3 EHR)
- Students watch Simone simulated encounter video #3
- Team to discuss any new findings and incorporate into SOAP-VS with out deleting their previous documentation
- Students participate in a faculty lead debrief and present team findings while faculty advisor(s) complete rubric
Session Four - Within 24 hours after Session Three
Students complete post-activity assessment (Simone Sodo Assessment - Post Session 3)
Notes:
- Assessment methods
- SOAP note is used to assess student’s clinical reasoning skills.
- Pre and post Simone Sodo Assessments are used to assess student growth in IPEC competencies.
- The simulation works best with one consistent faculty advisor across all sessions.
- The simulation has been successfully facilitated with up to three faculty advisors when necessary.
