Svetlana Dambaeva, MD, PhD

Research Assistant Professor, Associate Director of Clinical Immunology Laboratory

Dr. Dambaeva received her medical degree from Siberian State Medical University, Tomsk, Russia, in 1992 and started her career as a clinical laboratory physician in the Municipal Maternity Hospital, Ulan-Ude, Russia. In 2002 she earned a PhD degree in medical science from the prestigious Institute of Immunology in Moscow in the laboratory of Dr. Pinegin. She completed her postdoctoral training in Dr. Golos’s Lab at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, studying the primate endometrial response to placental MHC class I molecules.

In 2008, Dr. Dambaeva became assistant scientist in the Department of Comparative Biosciences at the University of Wisconsin, where she continued her research in the reproductive immunology field. To further pursue her career in clinical diagnostic laboratory, Dr. Dambaeva completed a Medical Laboratory Immunology Fellowship program, accredited by the American Society of Microbiology, in the laboratory of Dr. Kenneth Beaman and in 2014 was board certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology (ABMLI).

In addition to being a member of the Chicago Medical School faculty, Dr. Dambaeva serves as assistant director of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory at Rosalind Franklin University.


Dr. Dambaeva’s research interests include immune response at the maternal-fetal interface and analysis of immune mechanisms of infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss. Infertility and recurrent pregnancy losses affect millions Americans. Despite improvements in diagnostic assessment, no explanations have been found in many cases, although immune factors are often implied. Currently, with the focus on clinical immunology laboratory, Dr. Dambaeva’s goal is to develop and validate novel diagnostic tests that will help physicians to identify the immune etiology of pregnancy loss and infertility.

Endometrium is a unique tissue that undergoes cyclic changes. Innate lymphoid cells (ILC) are known to play a central role in tissue remodeling and homeostasis at mucosal and epithelial barrier surfaces, and were also detected in pregnant and non-pregnant endometrium (ILC1 and ILC3). Among factors secreted by ILC is IL-22, the cytokine that plays important role in proliferation and differentiation of cells at various epithelial surfaces and in prevention of preterm birth in mouse model. The characterization of factors involved in the regulation of ILC activity and the role of IL-22 in cycling and pregnant endometrium will advance the understanding of pathogenesis of pregnancy related disorders. SGK1 (serum/glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1) and sodium levels, which are known to be involved in differentiation of IL-22 secreting Th17 cells, are studied in relation to regulation of IL-22 production in the endometrium. Moreover, the uncovering the relationship between endometrial NK cells, which are the most abundant cells in late luteal phase and early pregnancy endometrium, and classical ILC will provide important information on development and plasticity of ILC subsets. The determination of optimal balance between proinflammatory and homeostatic signals required for establishment of healthy pregnancy is a necessary step in the development of valid diagnostic test.
