Dr. David Garfield received his medical degree from UCSF School of Medicine and completed his psychiatry training at Harvard’s Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He also finished his psychoanalytic training in 2006 at Chicago’s Institute for Psychoanalysis and he is on their voluntary teaching faculty. He has written dozens of articles on psychotherapy and his book “Unbearable Affect: A Guide to the Psychotherapy of Psychosis” is in its second edition (Karnac, 2009). He has co-edited the book “Beyond Medication” and he lectures internationally on psychosis.

Dr. Garfield retired in 2019 after more than 30 years at CMS. During his time at the medical school, he served as director of the CMS psychiatry residency program, education director of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
