"PAs are health professionals licensed or, in the case of those employed by the federal government, credentialed to practice medicine in collaboration with physicians. PAs are qualified by graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Within the physician-PA relationship, PAs provide patient-centered medical care services as a member of a healthcare team. PAs practice with defined levels of autonomy and exercise independent medical decision making within their scope of practice."

Since its inception in 1991, more than 1,300 students have graduated from the Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Rosalind Franklin University. The faculty takes pride in educating students through innovative and interactive classroom activities, team-based learning, quality clinical rotation experiences, and state of the art simulation. The interprofessional focus of the PA Program, and throughout Rosalind Franklin University, prepares our students to practice as members of effective healthcare teams in a wide range of medical specialties and settings..

The mission of the Physician Assistant Program is to educate and prepare competent, compassionate, and ethical physician assistant leaders who, as integral members of the interprofessional healthcare team, will provide quality patient-centered care to a diverse population.

Providing excellent didactic and clinical medical education to every student:

  • The program incorporates innovative teaching methods, such as team learning with the availability of curricular resources including a virtual healthcare system and an Education and Evaluation Center.
  • The attainment of 100% first-time pass rate on National Board Exams for Class of 2016, 2017, and 2018; program pass rates at or above national pass rate for the past seven years.

Educating physician assistant students to be integral members of an interprofessional team by serving the healthcare needs of the community. 

  • Collaboration among professionals is woven throughout the curriculum in courses such as Interprofessional Case Collaborations, Physical Assessment, Leadership in the Healthcare Environment, and Foundations of Interprofessional Practice where physician assistant students take classes with medical, pharmacy, podiatry, physical therapy, pathologists’ assistant, psychology, and nurse anesthesia students.
  • Faculty and students participate in co-curricular community activities such as the Interprofessional Community Clinic, Healthy Families Clinic, and the Community Care Connection mobile clinic.

Promoting scholarly activity through the creation of curricular innovations, integration of validated assessment methodologies, and peer-reviewed research publications to demonstrate our commitment to lifelong learning.

  • Curricular innovations presented at local, state, and national conferences by faculty and students
  • Addition of validated Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) End of Rotation exams correlated to successful completion of the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE).
  • Faculty publish in peer-reviewed publications and serves on university, state, and national organizations that promote lifelong learning. Thirty-six percent of PA program faculty have published in a peer-reviewed journal or delivered a presentation at a national conference over the past year.

Promoting the development of state and national leaders to serve the physician assistant profession.

  • Forty-five percent of faculty and alumni serve on state and national organizations that advocate for the physician assistant education and practice: Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants (IAPA), Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), Accreditation Review Commission for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA), National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Faculty hold leadership roles as clinic administrators in the community.

Promoting diversity in our admissions process via a holistic application review process to give balanced consideration to all components of an application.

  • Admissions processes value diversity and richness of the learning environment derived from a diverse pool of applicants.
  • Recruitment efforts have resulted in maintaining greater than 50% of the students representing at least one Value Added Group for the past four cohorts, and greater than 60% for the past three cohorts.
