RFU Receives $1.1 Million Donation to Support Chicago Medical School Student Scholarships

Alumnus S. Burton “Burt” Roth, MD '63 and the late Mrs. Natalie Roth, of Naples FL, formerly Oak Brook IL, have donated $1.1 million to support Chicago Medical School student scholarships.

The generous donation was made in honor of former dean and president, Dr. John J. Sheinin, who is credited with propelling CMS in 1948 to become the only school, of 79 independent institutions, to achieve full accreditation by the American Medical Association. It was because of Dr. Sheinin that countless CMS alumni were given the opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming physicians.

Several members of the Roth and Sheinin families were in attendance during a lobby dedication at Rosalind Franklin University Oct. 19 in Sheinin’s honor.

"Dr. Sheinin was the driving force behind the school being recognized as an accredited institution," said CMS Dean Dr. James Record. " His efforts provided the foundation for all that CMS has become. We're so thankful for Dr. Roth's generous gift, which will make medical education more affordable for many bright, deserving students. It's a testament to his deep connection to his medical alma mater and his desire that future generations of physicians are able to thrive at CMS."

Dr. Roth is a 1963 graduate of CMS and retired obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced for more than 40 years in the Chicago area. He delivered more than 5,000 babies in his illustrious medical career. Click to read an article published in the Chicago Tribune.
