Chicago Medical School MD Program Receives Full Accreditation

Chicago Medical School’s doctor of medicine program has received full accreditation for the maximum eight-year term permitted by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

“This award is the culmination of a two-and-a-half-year dedicated effort from CMS/RFUMS faculty, staff, administration, students, alumni, and affiliated partners,” CMS Dean Archana Chatterjee, MD, PhD, said in an email to the university community. “I thank each and every person that was involved with these considerable and time consuming preparations. This truly was a collaborative effort.”

The accreditation process involves an extensive institutional self-evaluation, or self-study, that is submitted in advance of a site visit from an LCME survey team. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the CMS site visit occurred virtually in summer 2020.

LCME accreditation is a voluntary, peer-reviewed process of quality assurance that determines whether the medical education program meets established standards in areas such as administration, academic and clinical environments, curriculum content and student support services. Programs are required to demonstrate that their graduates exhibit general professional competencies appropriate for entry to the next stage of their training and that serve as the foundation for lifelong learning and proficient medical care.

The next full survey visit is scheduled to take place during the 2027–28 academic year.
