During the last two decades, human motion analysis systems have been developed using various technologies, such as camera-based, magnetic, ultrasound, electro-mechanical systems. An important general drawback to these systems is that the subject can only move within a closed and constrained space, typically a radius of not more than a few feet. The recent emergence of body-worn sensor technology has provided new avenues for measurement and assessment of the physical activity and daily motor function (e.g. postural transition, walking, etc.) during everyday life. Devices based on body-worn sensors are highly portable, and do not require supporting stationary units such as transmitters, receivers, or cameras. Additionally, due to recent advances in MEMS technology, these sensors are significantly cheaper to manufacture than sonic, magnetic and optical motion capture systems. We have almost a decade of experience in the development of algorithms and ambulatory devices based on the body-worn sensor technology for human movement analysis, and in particular, for the evaluation the risk of falling and fall prevention among elderly subjects and diabetic patients, who suffer from balance instability.

LEGSys - Gait LEGSys™ is a portable system with body-worn sensors for easy and fast quantitative gait analysis. It’s wireless wearable sensors provide convenience for collecting gait data in virtually any place. Our lab has conducted multiple research projects at clinics, outpatient rehab centers, physician offices, etc. In addition to gait analysis, LEGSys™ can be configured for balance assessment.
BalanSens - Balance
PAMSys™ is a unique platform for long-term objective evaluation of physical activity during everyday life. Using PAMSys™, health scientists, physical therapists, and other health-care professionals can obtain information about:
- Posture (sitting, standing, walking, or lying down)
- Gait (duration, number of steps, cadence, and step time variability)
- Postural transitions (duration and time of occurrence)
- Falls (number of falls and time of occurrence)
Physilog is an ambulatory system based on body-worn sensor, has been designed for the analysis of locomotion. It includes four body-worn sensors attached on each shank, thigh and one sensor attached to subject's lower back. This configuration enables to extract the spatio-temporal parameter of gait as well as dynamic balance during walking and in free condition.
MotionNode is a 3-DOF inertial measurement unit (IMU) for use in motion sensing applications. This sensor module enables extracting the 3D motion of body segment in real time.
