Day of Service

During the week of May 7, you will receive communication regarding your Day of Service Community Partner assignment as well as important instructions to access Bright Space to take the required course that will introduce you to our community.

New Student Orientation will kick off with a Day of Service on Wednesday, May 22. You will have the opportunity to engage in one of two team-based service projects. This first experience will underline the RFU values of interprofessional work, community service, and care for the underserved.

You will be introduced to the Lake County Community, the needs, assets, and what makes us a unique setting for you to continue your education and develop your skills. Introduction to the community will be further enhanced by the participating agencies through a presentation on their role in the community.

Students, Faculty, and staff are invited to participate through the donation of new or gently used children's books for Bernie's Book Bank.

The day will conclude with a picnic at the pavilion for all new students, faculty and staff, and our community partners. This will serve as another opportunity to connect and share knowledge and experiences between our university and those agencies working for the benefit of our community.

Bernie's Book Bank: Students will sort and package books for low-income children in Lake County and surrounding communities in an assembly-line style facility. Books donated to Bernie's are unsorted and of varying quality. Students will be responsible for sorting the books by age appropriateness and subject matter, as well as for packaging and labeling outgoing books.

Feed My Starving Children: Students will hand-pack rice, soy, dried vegetables and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets and shipped to the neediest children around the world.
