Horizon Pharma Fellowship Program

Duration: approx. 1 year (July 2018 – June 2019)

Fellowship Description: Horizon Pharma in partnership with the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Sciences, School of Pharmacy is offering a one-year post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Affairs. The fellow will play an active role in the art of communicating with healthcare practitioners and consumers, as well as learn how to respond to unsolicited scientific inquiries. The fellow will also learn how to create and develop standard response documents and other communication materials as well as play an active role in the management of the medical information contact center. Furthermore, the fellow will participate in external Advisory Boards, publication planning and data analysis, medical education and clinical trial data analysis.

Objective: The Medical Affairs fellowship is a one-year program, which will ensure that the candidate gains the experience and understanding of the various functions of a Medical Affairs department within the pharmaceutical industry.

The Fellowship Program will focus on the following functional areas at Horizon Pharma:

Medical Information:

  • Gain an in depth knowledge of Horizon’s products as well a thorough understanding of the clinical environment and the medical milieu in which Horizon’s products are used
  • Develop the necessary skills to serve as an information liaison with external clinicians and other Horizon colleagues and maintain current and accurate reference materials for Medical Affairs staff. These materials include but are not limited to:
    • Standard Response Letters (SRL) Database
    • Reference or content management system(s) for access to Package Inserts (PI), journal articles, publications, etc.
    • Clinical References (texts, journals reprints, posters, etc.)
    • Medical Information literature highlights
    • Medical Information weekly newsletter
  • Gain exposure to, and provide assistance in, managing Call Center vendor activities
  • Learn how to develop and update standard and individual response letters as needed and ensure the response to inquiries is provided in an accurate, balanced, and timely manner in accordance with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Regulatory guidelines
  • Gain an understanding of how to conduct interpretive literature searches and become adept at locating resources to address specific questions on Horizon’s products
  • Learn how to interpret published literature, regulations, and guidelines and develop weekly newsletters that will be circulated to all Medical Affairs personnel

Global Clinical Science/Medical Affairs Operations:

Global Clinical Science

  • Understand the medical strategies and initiatives that support external Healthcare Professionals
  • Observe the role of field based Medical Directors through in-field shadowing opportunities
  • Meet Local/Regional/National Thought Leaders in Rheumatology, Nephrology, Medical Genetics, Immunology, Pediatrics

Medical Affairs Operations

  • Contribute to the development of materials, resources, and tools used by the Global Clinical Science Organization
  • Assist with the ongoing development of Medical Affairs standard operating procedures
  • Understand and participate in the evolution of our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool MEDVIEW
  • Support the Director and Senior Director of Operations with the management of Major Medical Congresses across various therapeutic areas

Publication Planning/ Promotional Review/Medical Education:

  • Gain understanding of medical review of advertising and promotional materials, both branded and unbranded scientific and educational materials. Will be responsible for medically reviewing and recommending changes to promotional materials with a minimum of three (3) reviews, dependent on content length
  • Support medical communication activities including publication planning. Will be responsible for reviewing clinical data and recommending creation of abstracts, conference materials or publications (number and content to be determined). Will complete the specific task of developing a template abstract and poster for a scientific meeting

The fellowship program will also focus on having the fellow acquire teaching skills specifically focusing on teaching Drug Information (DI) in an institutional setting (duration TBD). This will include:

  • Developing effective teaching skills via application of pedagogical theory. The fellow will participate in the College’s Teaching Certificate Program.
  • Developing methods utilized to educate and evaluate students as well as most effective teaching/learning strategies
  • Building a lecture on an assigned DI topic to be presented to student pharmacists
  • Facilitate a recitation exercise using small/large group teaching methodologies
  • Assess student’s drug information knowledge and skills using grading rubrics, exams, questions, etc.
  • Apply skills obtained in the program to educate students on their Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Completion of a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm. D) at an ACPE accredited institution prior to fellowship commencement
  • Completion of a Drug Information rotation highly desirable
  • Experience in a Drug Information and/or Medical Information setting preferred
